How To // Prevent Candle Tunneling

I've been loving scented candles lately but whenever I burn them for a while...it tunnels. Which means that the outer rim of the candle is left wasted and unburned! Of course, you can get those fancy lids with holes in them, but if you want a quick and ridiculously cheap solution that only requires things around the house...this is for you!
I actually got this off my sister (so credits to her) but to those of you that have this problem, here's a solution to candle tunneling - that comes with a Pin-worthy image so you don't ever forget!

1. Get your tunneled candle
2. Find a piece of aluminium foil that is big enough to cover the top of your candle
3. Cover the candle with the aluminium foil - since aluminium is extremely malleable, it can be moulded to fit it perfectly
4. Using a pen knife or a sharp object, carve out a medium sized circle in the centre - doesn't have to be perfect
5. Light your candle and place your makeshift lid over the top and watch it burn
6. And... voila! You get a flat candle surface = more burn time!

*Please note that effects aren't immediate, the surface will gradually even out the longer you burn your candle!

A little bit of science

The aluminium foil traps the heat around the edges where it covers and thus, the wax melts evenly instead of just around the wick.

See, how quick, simple and cheap is that?! Hope you found it useful!

D is for Dungarees

It's time for the 4th week of the Alphabet Challenge! Scroll down to see what it's all about. This week, D it is for Dungarees.

I used to hate dungarees. To me, they had a country, farmer and childish vibe to them and hence I stayed away. But lately, I've been really liking them and really want to get one!

Now, dungarees are becoming more of a fashion statement. Gone are the child-like images! Now, you can get them in all sorts of styles instead of just blue denim! Long pants, shorts, skirts...and in loads of colours and patterns too!

A few of my favourites:

1 - Karma Clothing // 2 - River Island  // 3 - Fashion Union // 4 - Karma Clothing // 5 - Own the Runway

Personally, I prefer the skirt-style dungarees as it gives a flirty feminine twist. Don't you think the batman printed one is totally wicked?
How I would wear them:

Crop top -Topshop // Dungaree Skirt - River Island // Converse // Suede backpack - Charlotte Russe

Until I venture out into riskier waters, I would probably stick to the safe zone. You can't go wrong with pairing dungarees with a simple top and sneakers. This look would be great for casual outings, festivals, school or even a picnic date! Possibilities are endless.

Alternatively, you can change up your look with different printed tops, long sleeved tops, bandeaus for a more risque look, tights on colder days and maybe even wedges, heels, statement necklaces and a blazer for fancier nights!

3 tips on wearing dungarees:

1. Wear a slim fitting top underneath and don't forget to go brightly coloured when pairing with plain dungarees

2. Dungarees are meant to be very loose-fitting so wearing heels and wedges could polish up the casual look

3. Who says dungarees can't be worn in warmer weathers - wear a jacket over, scarf, tights and boots!

Need more inspiration?

None of the pictures are mine. Most from HERE.
Time to dig out those dungarees and style them a la Alexa Chung style (:

What are your favourite form of dungarees and how would you style them?

Summer Series #5: How to cure sunburns

(Side note: Sorry for not posting yesterday! Came home quite late as it was the last day of school and was so sleepy that I just crashed!)
The fifth post in the Summer Series! To see the others, go HERE (under 'Summer 2013 Series')
You might be having a great time at the beach, or out sight seeing in the streets this summer. At the end of the day, the last thing you want to do is worry about painful, sore, red sunburns as a result for not enough sunscreen or over-exposed skin! They're not the most comfortable or prettiest looking thing in the world. So here are some tips to help soothe the pain - just in case:
1. Have a cool bath or gentle shower OR use an ice pack
In order to soothe the burn

2. Apply aloe vera
It reduces inflammation and leaves a soothing feeling

3. Moisturize
After a cold shower or bath, put on either moisturizing cream or lotion to soothe the skin. Repeat to make peeling and flaking less noticeable.

4. Hydrate yourself
Burns draw fluids away from the rest of the body, so drink water, juice or sports drinks!

5. Yogurt
Spread yogurt (preferably full-fat, plain and unsweetened) on the burned area. Leave it on the skin until it gets warm and then rinse it off.

6. Apple cider vinegar
Place it in a spray bottle and store it in the fridge before spraying in on the burned area.

7. Potato peels
Sounds weird? It's actually an old remedy for sunburns! It contains moisture and anti-bacterial properties that helps with the healing process

8. Cucumber
Either apply thin slices of cold cucumber directly or puree a peeled cucumber and rub it on the affected area. This one gives a cooling sensation!

9. Cold milk
Soak a clean cloth in a bowl with equal parts of milk, ice cubes and water. Compress it on the sunburn for about 5 minutes. Repeat three times.
The fat, protein and pH of the milk has a soothing anti-inflammatory effect on the skin and the coldness constricts blood vessels and reduces swelling

DO NOT:
- Use soap, bath oils or other detergents when taking a bath or showering. These products will irritate the skin and make the sunburn effects worse
- Scrub, pick or peel your skin
- Break blisters

So here are some natural remedies for sunburns in case you're away on holiday!

Double Braided Headband: How To

I've been seeing myself wearing braids AND headbands (separately) a lot lately - but in very simple styles. I'm a big failure when it comes to styling my hair so if it's simple and quick, I'm in. Anyway, I've seen lots of pictures with people wearing braided headbands - headbands in the form of braids...of your own hair! - before, but always thought that it required real talent to do - something I would never be able to do in a million years. Yet I found this tutorial and it's actually much simple then you'd expect!

 Here's how to do it:
What you need:

Optional: Hairspray + Tease comb
Steps
1. Gather all your hair into a high ponytail - apart from a strand of hair (about 4cm wide, but adjust according to how thick you want your braid to be) just below your ear on BOTH sides
2. Braid one side of your hair normally and bring it over your head, on to the other side and pin it in place
3. Do the same to the other side, placing it next to the other braid
4. Adjust according to how front/back you would like your headband to be
5. Optional: Use hairspray to set it in place
Something different: Now that you've got your headband, you can do what you want with the rest of your hair! Put it in a bun, ponytail, leave it down with curls or have it half-up-half-down

Result

As you can see, I went for the 'half up half down' style and only tied up the top part of my hair (:

I love this style! It's unique yet VERY simple! And you can dress it up with a bun, or down with a ponytail. It's all up to you! I actually accomplished this one night when I got bored revising for Geography and had a mini self dance party when I did! Hehehe C:

This would work best for medium to long hair - well, as long as you have enough to wrap it over the crown of your head!

How celebrities wear it:

This has to be my favourite one because it looks so effortless and classy!

Because I'm not very good at explaining in words, go to THIS LINK for step by step images (:

What do you think about this hairstyle? Do post a link in the comment section if you do try it out!
