Reclaim Bags is a British based brand that not only makes fashionable purses and clutches, but takes it one step further by using recycled rubber inner tubes as the main material in order to test the limits of re-use, reduce and recycle.
"By emerging ourselves within the fashion industry and through the use of innovative and contemporary design, RECLAIM BAGS primarily wants to reduce the stigma surrounding recycled products, with emphasis being that something beautiful can be produced out of something that would have otherwise been waste."
I also had the pleasure of asking them a few questions to get to know more about the brand itself:
1. What is the company's aim?
We aim to produce a sustainable range of handbags and accessories that will change people's perceptions of recycled products. We want not only to be a sustainable business but also a business that is recognised in the fashion industry. Through the use of innovative and contemporary design we want to reduce the stigma surrounding recycled products, with emphasis being that something beautiful can be produced out of something that would have otherwise been waste.
2. Where/How did the inspiration behind this unique concept come about?
The concept was born while I was studying Fashion at University. I was working on a project that centred around innovation. We were encouraged to explore unusual materials and interesting pattern cutting. The recycled rubber inner tubing was one of the materials that I found. I knew immediately that I wanted to work with it and finished uni with a collection of accessories made from the rubber. I really saw potential in the idea and hence moved on to pursue it further.
3. Were there any challenges that have risen along the way?
I think the biggest challenge was and still is getting people to accept the fact that the material we use is rubber. A lot of people are surprised and sometimes mistake it for leather. It is a new, quirky concept and it will take time for some people to get used to it.
